Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik
This
architecturally unique city arose in the 12th century
when the 7th-century islet settlement of Ragusa merged
with the town of Dubrovnik on the mainland. The sea
channel between them was filled in to become the marble-paved
main street, Placa Stradun. Later, encircling ramparts
were built, which remain the most complete in Europe.
Dubrovnik prospered through trade until 1667, when
an earthquake destroyed most of it, except for the
Renaissance Pile Gate and Sponza Palace. The beautiful,
red-titled city that was rebuilt has now been largely
restored after the 1991-2 shelling in the Yugoslav
civil war.
